Hypnotherapy for a fear of frogs.......
By Ian Hardwick
A phobia can be literally terrifying and debilitating but even if
you knew hypnotherapy could help, would you be brave enough to give
it a try? For a medical secretary from Halesowen her biggest fear
was that it wouldn’t work.
After moving into her new home (with a pond) Claire H. came to
Therapy Lounge in Harborne seeking help for an extreme phobia to
frogs. Ian Hardwick is the Clinical Hypnotherapist who treated her.
He explains:
“Many people are unsure about hypnotherapy because of misconceptions
fuelled primarily by the portrayal of stage hypnosis on TV and in
the media. Like many professional Hypnotherapists I distance myself
from such ‘entertainment’ which I believe is unethical. Hypnotherapy
is in fact a clinical process for the treatment and relief of a wide
variety of medical somatic and psychological symptoms. It is a very
pleasant state of deep relaxation utilising the subconscious and
enabling a client to make positive changes to achieve their goal.
You will have experienced natural hypnotic states when watching TV,
daydreaming or driving for example, these are pleasant dream like
states when we ‘drift off’”.
Claire describes her session: “I chose Ian because we had an instant
rapport over the phone, he was professional and I felt I could trust
him with my problem which had reached the stage where I could not go
into my garden by the pond without my heart racing, fighting for
breath, feeling clammy and completely unable to move. I had resorted
to keeping all the doors and windows closed and even the cats were
kept indoors because of my phobia.
“The hypnotherapy session wasn’t what I was expecting. I thought I
would be out for the count but it was almost a surreal feeling of
being there yet not being there and felt reassured and in control
throughout. When we explored my phobia my initial anxiety soon
passed to be replaced by deep relaxation.”
The root of the phobia went back to Claire’s childhood experiences.
“I realised that I was continuing to have a child’s reaction (albeit
a severe one) to a frightening experience, that I no longer needed
to have as an adult. It was that simple, I was able to make the
necessary changes and eliminate the anxiety. I was cured in just one
session and now I can enjoy summer evenings in my garden. I was
surprised to discover just how pleasant and effective hypnotherapy
can be.”
Ian Hardwick concludes: “Claire is typical of many clients I see and
most issues are resolved in as few as 1 – 4 sessions. Our free
consultation provides an ideal opportunity to address any concerns
or misconceptions a client may have and in fact those clients who
arrive as sceptics often become some of the biggest advocates.”
